About the Role

Job Title: Staff Engineer (Planning / Decision Making)

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the AV Decision Making team, focusing on the development, integration, and deployment of AV reasoning software for complex environments.
• Own the architecture and strategic direction of the team, shaping the development of Oxa Drive.
• Collaborate across teams, including routing, trajectory planning, and machine learning, to achieve safe and predictable AV driving behavior.
• Promote best practices in engineering and software development within the team.
• Create metrics and tools to measure the performance of the planning software stack.
• Oversee the engineering lifecycle, including scoping, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
• Document and train others on team projects, focusing on feature improvement and business value.
• Lead hiring and onboarding efforts, defining roles and mentoring new team members.
• Identify projects that enhance product quality, customer experience, and team processes.

Requirements

• Education:

  • PhD in a related field (Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics) with significant industry experience preferred.
  • MS in a related field with extensive industry experience acceptable.

• Experience:

  • Practical experience in Behavior Planning, Decision Making, and Trajectory Planning for autonomous driving.
  • Prior tech lead and people management experience in a robotics software development team.
  • Deep understanding of Robotics Fundamentals, including:
    • Robotics architectures
    • 2D/3D Geometry & transformations
    • Vehicle kinematics and dynamics
    • Probability handling and uncertainty representation

• Skills:

  • Strong C++ and basic Python software development skills.
  • Understanding of modern software engineering practices, including automated testing and CI.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML techniques for decision making and/or motion planning in the AV space.
