I’ve spent over 10 years building machine learning products across startups, gaming, and ad tech. At hx, we’re applying AI in a way that actually changes how an entire industry works. We’re building the world’s first domain-specific AI peer-programmer for insurance—think GitHub Copilot, but trained in actuarial science and regulation. You’ll help us reinvent how insurers code, model risk, and make billion-dollar decisions. Like AWS changed how devs develop and deploy software, we’re doing the same for insurance - with you building the AI that makes it possible.

The other is our crown jewel: a domain-specific AI peer-programmer that lives inside our custom IDE - think Copilot, but with a PhD in actuarial science. Both are live, evolving fast, and already changing how actuaries work day-to-day.

Your Unique Mission

As a Senior Engineer in our AI team, you'll architect and engineer AI-driven products from scratch, directly addressing complex problems with no established playbook. You’ll design and implement innovative solutions such as specialised coding copilots within our proprietary development environment.

Working within a startup-like team at the heart of hx, you’ll have significant autonomy to lead groundbreaking experiments and quickly see your innovations deployed to solve real-world insurance challenges.

What Your First 3 Months Will Look Like

• First, you'll dive deep into our AI systems, architecture, and product suite and get to know the unique problems we’re solving through hands-on onboarding. By the end of the month, you'll have shipped your first meaningful contribution.
• During second month you’ll take ownership of a scoped feature or improvement within one of our core products in hx AI - you’ll be trusted and encouraged to push changes into production and see real-world impact.
• By the end of your third month, you’ll be a fully embedded member of the team, helping shape our roadmap, contributing to architectural decisions, and collaborating across hx to evolve our AI capabilities as we scale. In no time you’ll be solving problems no one’s cracked yet.

Your toolkit includes:

• Extensive experience developing and deploying production-grade ML and AI systems at scale in cloud environments.
• Deep Python expertise - you live in PyTorch, Hugging Face, and friends
• Experience with distributed systems and modern MLOps best practices
• A self-starter mindset - you spot high-leverage opportunities and run with them
• Strong communication skills - you make the complex sound simple

Bonus points if you bring:

• Hands-on experience with LLMs in production, especially for NLP
• Familiarity with regulated domains (insurance, fintech, etc.)
• A footprint in the community: open source, writing, talks, or contributions
