ABOUT AXILES BIONICS
Axiles Bionics is a Brussels-based spin-off from Brubotics (VUB), specializing in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Biomechanics, striving to improve the quality of life with new bionic technologies. Our mission is to bring peace of mind and body to amputees with innovative bionic solutions and outstanding services.
We are a highly motivated team entering a phase of sustainable and structured growth. While our roots are in managing and delivering innovative R&D projects, we are progressively expanding our activities across sales, marketing, and operations. Our ambition is to grow responsibly, build strong foundations, and create long-term impact, both for our projects and for the people who contribute to them.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This role exists to bridge the critical gap between our advanced engineering—specifically the integration of real-time AI and Reinforcement Learning, ensuring our innovations move from the lab into the hands of prosthetists and patients. As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will serve as the primary architect of our bionic solutions, moving beyond traditional development to bridge the gap between complex biomechanical theory and high-performance bionic execution. By developing the robust software frameworks and embedding the adaptive AI policies that ensure our devices operate with unparalleled precision, you will apply sophisticated engineering principles to technology that carries a profound social impact. We aim to accelerate territory growth and establish the long-term trust required to make our intelligent bionic technology the new standard in prosthetic care, directly enhancing the independence and quality of life for individuals globally.
We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer with 4-6 years of experience -- who will play a crucial role in developing, optimizing, testing, and maintaining the intelligent control systems of our next-generation bionic devices, delivering a profound social impact by restoring mobility to those who need it most. Your mission is to ensure the thorough and efficient verification of all software and firmware developed at Axiles Bionics, across every design phase and stage of product development. Beyond core embedded architecture, you will lead the integration of AI-driven control algorithms, taking charge of designing, training, and embedding Reinforcement Learning policies directly into our systems to achieve intuitive, adaptive device behavior. You will also be critical in designing the necessary digital tools and simulation environments for comprehensive product validation. As a key member of the Research & Development team reporting to the CTO, you will collaborate closely with mechanical, electronics, and quality assurance engineers to bridge the gap between advanced machine learning and real-time hardware execution.
The mission of the Embedded Software Engineer at Axiles Bionics is to give "life" and "intelligence" to our mechanical innovations. You are charged with developing the neural center of our bionic devices, ensuring that every movement is as intuitive and adaptive as a natural limb. By mastering the integration of Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning and real-time firmware, your mission is to transform cold hardware into a responsive extension of the human body. Ultimately, you are the guardian of the user’s trust, ensuring that our technology performs with the safety and reliability required to become an effortless part of their daily lives
WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Bridge AI and Hardware: You will take cutting-edge AI research from the "lab" and make it functional in the real world by training Reinforcement Learning policies in Python and deploying them as efficient C-code.
• Engineer for Safety & Precision: You will be the primary architect of the system's "brain," ensuring that every control policy is embedded with the reliability required for medical-grade bionic mobility.
• Own Your Workflow: You will take full responsibility for your development cycle by setting up your own Sprints, performing time effort analysis, and maintaining a professional Jira environment.
• Solve Systematic Problems: You will break down high-level challenges—such as adaptive gait control or real-time sensor fusion—into logical, manageable tasks within the R&D roadmap.
• Drive the R&D Lifecycle: You will participate in the entire journey of a device, from initial concept and simulation to final hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) verification and clinical testing.
• Collaborate with Purpose: You will act as a technical bridge, working with the CTO and cross-functional engineers to ensure that software, mechanics, and electronics converge into a seamless product.
• Maximize Social Impact: Every technical decision you make will be aimed at accelerating territory growth and ensuring our technology moves out of the lab and into the hands of the patients who need it most.
WHAT YOU BRING
• You hold a Master’s degree or PhD in Robotics, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems, or Computer Science, providing you with the theoretical depth required to bridge the gap between AI and physical hardware.
• You possess a "Hardware-Logic" hybrid mindset, allowing you to move seamlessly from training complex Reinforcement Learning policies in Python to deploying them in real-time C-code.
• You are an expert in Real-Time Execution, with a deep understanding of bare-metal development and Zephyr OS on STM32, Microchip, or NXP architectures, ensuring our devices are both responsive and safe.
• You have hands-on experience with physics simulation, having used tools like MuJoCo, MyoSuite, or Isaac Sim to model bionic systems, define reward functions, and train policies while remaining acutely aware of the "sim-to-real" gap and its limitations.
• You bring a systematic approach to AI, utilizing frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow to design and embed Reinforcement Learning policies that learn and adapt to human movement.
• You are a disciplined architect of your own work, capable of performing time effort analysis, managing your own Jira environment, and setting up sprints to ensure predictable R&D progress.
• You feel at home in a multidisciplinary lab, collaborating closely with mechanical and electronics engineers to ensure that software and hardware converge into a single, high-performance system.
• You are a rigorous validator, committed to thorough verification across all design phases, ensuring that every line of code meets the highest standards of medical-grade reliability.
• You are a mission-driven problem solver, motivated by the challenge of translating advanced control theory into a profound social impact for individuals with mobility challenges.
• You are fluent in English, enabling you to contribute effectively to our international R&D team and document complex technical architectures for global standards.
WHAT WE OFFER
• Make a Real Impact: Contribute to a mission-driven deep-tech company where your work directly improves the lives of amputees through cutting-edge robotics and AI.
• Purpose-Driven Culture: Join a team guided by excellence, benevolence, and a shared commitment to building technology that truly matters.
• Professional Growth: Develop your skills in a fast-growing, international environment where learning, initiative, and ownership are encouraged.
• Collaborate with Experts: Work at the intersection of robotics, biomechanics, and human empowerment alongside a world-class team of engineers and innovators.
• Modern Work Environment: Enjoy a dynamic startup spirit with an open culture and flexible working conditions that support a healthy work-life balance.
• Competitive Package: We offer a competitive salary, mobility support (including car allowance/options), and a comprehensive benefits package tailored to your role.
