Senior Scientist (Microbiome) — Bermondsey, London, UK — £45k-£55k salary range + benefits

Salient Bio is an innovative and rapidly growing health diagnostics start-up based in central London, focussed on developing and delivering clinical grade microbiome testing. At Salient we have built a full-stack microbiome testing platform, from sampling kit assembly to data analysis and everything in-between. Our team includes exceptional scientists and software engineers from academia and industry, and we work collaboratively to achieve our goals.
Role Description
We have exciting plans for growth and are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Senior Scientist to join us. You will contribute to our core mission of developing new in-vitro diagnostic microbiome tests, as well as driving development of our wellness testing products. At Salient we want important health research to have a positive impact for everyone, which you will achieve through detailed literature analysis and thorough experimentation, as well as clear communication of test results. You will also contribute to the design and practical development of new and improved lab protocols and workflows, collaborating closely with our bioinformatics team. This role will be mainly on-site at our Bermondsey labs, especially at first, with more opportunities for hybrid work once you are integrated into the team.
Key Attributes
• Approximately 6+ years experience related to the study of microbiomes (ideally human microbiomes) and microbiology. This can be from PhD/postdoctoral work in a relevant subject or equivalent industry experience.
• Experience of successful grant writing, where you have been the lead contributor to the application (not necessarily the lead applicant!)
• Proven capability for detailed and critical literature research.
• Excellent wet lab skills across a broad range of molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation and PCR.
• Great communication skills to interpret and report experimental data.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to prioritise, define timelines, multitask, and deliver to these commitments.
• A team player who enjoys a collaborative approach, who can take on both leadership and supportive roles as appropriate.
• Delivers results and implements new ideas with excellent troubleshooting skills.
• Understanding of standard NGS workflows and associated QCs.
• Motivation and ambition to make a meaningful contribution to healthcare.
• Good attention to detail and record keeping, in keeping with our UKAS accreditation standard.
