Scientist I – Product development
Location: Cambridge, UK
Employment Type: Full‑time
If you’re a product development scientist who loves being in the lab, solving technical challenges, and contributing to products that power next‑generation sequencing, this role offers a chance to make a real impact early in your career.
About the Role
You’ll join a collaborative R&D team developing innovative reagents and workflows for NGS. This is a hands‑on laboratory position where you’ll design and run experiments, analyse data, and help drive improvements in product performance and robustness.
What You’ll Do
Perform molecular biology experiments to support NGS reagent research and development
Prepare and optimise DNA libraries, enzymes, and buffer systems
Troubleshoot assays and contribute to iterative workflow improvements
Maintain accurate experimental records and contribute to technical documentation
Work closely with scientists across the whole company
Present experimental findings to project teams

BSc or MSc in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biotechnology, or a related field
1-2 years of hands‑on laboratory experience in industry
Essential skills, at least 1 of the following:
Library preparation for NGS (Illumina or ONT)
DNA/RNA extraction AND PCR/qPCR
Desirable but not essential experience with:
Product development
Experience of reagent formulation, QC, filling and kitting in a production environment.
DoE
Automation / Liquid handlers
Working/writing SOPs
Strong experimental design and troubleshooting skills
Ability to analyse data and communicate findings clearly
A proactive, collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for learning new techniques
