Who we are
Biocentis is a biotech company on a mission to develop sustainable and eco-friendly solutions to control harmful insect species – including those that spread disease to humans, reduce biodiversity, or threaten food security. We leverage patent-pending genome engineering approaches to develop biocontrol insect strains that can be released into the environment for species-specific and eco-friendly pest control.
A spin-out from Imperial College London in 2022, Biocentis is headquartered in Milan, Italy. Our R&D team comprises outstanding specialists in insect germline transformation and experimentation, molecular biology experts, and research leaders in genetic control & gene drive, with further support from university collaborators. Biocentis data, operations, and business teams complement R&D efforts to fast-track lab development towards field application. Biocentis is supported by venture capital, private investment, and research grants from the Wellcome Trust and Italian Government.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as an expert scientist developing of ground-breaking biocontrol solutions. Find out more at: Biocentis - Shaping the future of insect control
The role
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Technician to support the generation and evaluation of DNA constructs and genetically modified insect strains for effective and environmentally responsible pest control.
The role is primarily focused on molecular biology and will involve hands-on wet-lab work under the supervision of senior members of the R&D team. Key responsibilities include plasmid generation using PCR, DNA extraction and purification, cloning (including Gibson assembly and Golden Gate cloning), restriction digestion, gel electrophoresis, and preparation of samples for sequencing. You will also contribute to the downstream creation and characterisation of genetically modified insect strains using these constructs.
This work includes transgenesis via embryo microinjection, a technically demanding process requiring careful use of micromanipulation equipment, followed by fluorescence microscopy to identify modified insects. You will further support experiments involving these strains, including setting up genetic crosses, performing phenotypic analyses (e.g. fertility, behaviour, survival), and extracting genomic DNA, RNA, and protein for downstream analyses.
The position requires patience, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. Strong organisational, record-keeping, and laboratory management skills are essential, including maintaining a clean and well-organised laboratory, managing reagent stocks, and updating inventories. A solid foundation in genetics is desirable. Experience with insect colony maintenance is advantageous but not essential. Prior training in a molecular biology laboratory and/or insectary, and familiarity with genetic transformation or CRISPR/Cas9-based vector control tools, would be beneficial.
This is an opportunity to join a fast-paced biotech company developing innovative solutions with real-world impact. We want candidates who are enthusiastic about our mission, hard-working, and keen to develop their technical skills. Applicants must hold a degree in the biological sciences. Salaries are competitive and commensurate with experience, with the option to start with a training-focussed internship or apprenticeship.
