The company provides automated, cost-efficient solutions for cleaning, inspection, and monitoring, aiming to enhance safety and efficiency in maritime operations. Our mission is to bridge the gap between the maritime industry and advanced automation, creating smarter and safer workplaces.
Role Description
We are seeking a hands-on and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our underwater robotics engineering team. The ideal candidate will play a key role in the design, development, and testing of mechanical systems for underwater robotic platforms.
This role requires strong expertise in mechanical design, marine-grade materials, and subsea engineering challenges, along with the ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment with rapid prototyping cycles.
The position involves close collaboration with electronics, robotics, and software teams to develop reliable robotic systems capable of operating in demanding underwater environments.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Development
· Design and develop mechanical systems for underwater robotic platforms, including frame structures, propulsion systems, pressure housings, and sealing mechanisms.
· Optimise designs for hydrodynamic performance, manoeuvrability, and energy efficiency.
· Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and drawings using tools such as SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
· Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
Prototyping & Testing
· Build and test mechanical prototypes in both lab and underwater environments.
· Participate in field trials, sea trials, and system validation.
· Analyse performance data and iterate designs to improve reliability and performance.
Materials & Marine Engineering
· Select appropriate corrosion-resistant and marine-grade materials for long-term underwater operation.
· Design systems that withstand marine challenges, including corrosion, biofouling, pressure, and saltwater exposure.
· Develop reliable sealing systems, including O-ring and gasket-based subsea seals.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
· Work closely with electronics, control systems, and software teams to integrate mechanical systems with robotic subsystems.
· Coordinate with manufacturing partners, suppliers, and vendors for component sourcing and fabrication.
Documentation
· Prepare detailed technical drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation.
· Maintain records of design revisions, test results, and engineering changes.
Sustainability
· Ensure designs align with Alicia Bots’ commitment to environmentally responsible and sustainable maritime technologies.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
· 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in robotics, marine systems, or complex electromechanical products.
· Strong proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent).
· Knowledge of materials science and corrosion-resistant materials for marine environments.
· Experience with fluid dynamics or hydrodynamics related to propulsion systems.
· Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, 3D printing, and welding.
· Strong hands-on skills with prototyping, testing, and mechanical assembly.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience working on ROVs, AUVs, underwater drones, or marine robotics systems.
· Knowledge of pressure housing design and subsea sealing techniques.
· Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or structural simulation tools.
· Familiarity with hydrodynamic or CFD analysis tools.
· Understanding of electromechanical system integration.
· Exposure to marine industry standards or classification societies (DNV, ABS, etc.).
Key Skills
· Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment with rapid design iterations.
· Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
· Strong attention to detail and engineering rigor.
· Ability to manage multiple engineering tasks and meet project deadlines.
Why Join Alicia Bots?
· Be part of a company pioneering the future of underwater robotics.
· Work on cutting-edge robotic technologies transforming maritime operations.
· Collaborate with a passionate, global engineering team.
