Who is OmniMod?
OmniMod is a Norwegian startup founded in 2020. What started as a cybernetics and robotics Master’s thesis at NTNU turned into a fast-growing journey from Lego prototype to commercial deployment and international presence.
The first pilot was launched in 2023 and automated HeltHjem’s sorting needs. The first commercial deployment was launched the following year, streamlining Kitch’n’s value-added service operations. The latest deployment went live in 2025 and provided B.H. Ramberg with a smart buffering and sorting solution for cross-docking.
Today, OmniMod continues developing state-of-the-art solutions where modular hardware and versatile, AI-driven software are combined to realize unmatched performance and value creation.
This is just the beginning of transforming warehouses into software-defined sites where shifting demand turns to an advantage.
Intro to the OmniMod technology
The majority of OmniMod’s hardware and software is developed in-house, from modular steel frames to parcel path planning AI models.
On the hardware side, the system is constructed of a large grid of OmniUnits (OUs) , each containing a motor and control electronics. Eight OUs connect to one control PCB, which generates control outputs and monitors motor performance. A total of 18 control PCBs form a 12 x 12 OU grid of about 1 m², called an OmniModule . Each module has a local networking unit, which handles power management and communication with a central server via Ethernet. For a typical system, this results in about 4000 PCBs of our own design!
Our modular philosophy means that systems can be built as small or as large as the task at hand requires, and in a wide variety of shapes – all with the help of software configuration. This means less time is spent on tailoring for niche applications and more on improving the core product.
To keep track of everything, a grid of cameras, one for each module, is mounted above the system. These record the entire system surface, allowing our computer vision software to find the size, position and orientation of all items.
To allow as wide a range of goods as possible, we train our machine learning control loop on items of any size and shape – cardboard boxes, paper envelopes, polymer bags, grocery crates – if it needs to move, we want to support it. This works hand-in-hand with the hardware and firmware stack to ensure rapid, precise and observable movement.
At OmniMod, you work on exciting and impactful projects, collaborating with a team of experts in a supportive and innovative environment
