About Basalt
Basalt builds and integrates fully autonomous satellites and space systems for private enterprise and the U.S. government. We design, manufacture, and operate small satellite systems that deliver tailored space solutions at speed and scale.
The Role
Basalt is seeking a Director of Government Business Development to lead the capture and growth of Department of War and national security space business. The ideal candidate is a former DoW civilian or military service member with direct experience selling innovative technical systems to the Department. You will own the full government sales lifecycle —from relationship building and opportunity identification through proposal and award—and serve as a key voice in shaping Basalt's national security space product strategy.
Responsibilities
• Identify, qualify, and pursue U.S. government contract opportunities across DoW, the Intelligence Community, and allied agencies.
• Build and sustain relationships with program managers, contracting officers, and senior decision-makers within the national security space community.
• Develop and execute a government business capture strategy aligned with Basalt’s technical capabilities and growth objectives.
• Provide market intelligence and customer feedback to inform spacecraft product development, mission planning, and production priorities.
• Lead proposal efforts in coordination with engineering and operations teams, including responses to RFIs, RFPs, and BAAs.
• Represent Basalt at industry conferences, government forums, and classified briefings as required.
• Track the competitive landscape and advise leadership on positioning and partnership opportunities.
Qualifications
• Former U.S. Department of War civilian employee or military service member.
• Demonstrated experience selling or acquiring technical systems (hardware, software, or integrated solutions) within the DoW acquisition framework.
• Strong understanding of federal procurement processes, FAR/DFARS, and government contracting vehicles (SBIR/STTR, OTAs, IDIQs, etc.).
• Established network within the national security space and defense community.
• Ability to obtain or maintain a U.S. security clearance.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfort briefing senior government and military leaders.
Preferred
• Experience in space systems acquisition, satellite operations, or related aerospace programs.
• Familiarity with small satellite ESPA-class missions and associated government customers (e.g., SDA, SMC/SSC, NRO, AFRL).
• Active TS clearance.
