Job Responsibilities

Lead the development of embedded firmware for the Daisy modular lab automation platform, owning the firmware stack that controls our instruments (sensors, actuators, fluidics, motion systems, etc.).
Architect, write, and maintain real-time embedded software (RTOS-based C/C++) that is reliable, efficient, and scalable as we add new modules and features.
Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of firmware with hardware and higher-level software (cross-disciplinary teamwork is key).
Establish and enforce best practices for firmware development, including coding standards, version control, documentation, and automated testing/QA processes.
Diagnose and troubleshoot firmware issues, optimizing performance and responsiveness of the system. Conduct code reviews and mentor other firmware engineers or contractors.
Coordinate comprehensive testing and validation of firmware (unit testing, integration testing with hardware) to meet quality and reliability standards required for life science research environments.
Stay informed about emerging technologies in embedded systems and contribute to strategic decisions on microcontroller/processor selection, development tools, and new feature implementation for future versions of the Daisy platform.

Qualifications

7+ years of experience in embedded systems firmware development, including significant hands-on work with C/C++ in an RTOS environment. Prior experience leading or architecting firmware for complex electromechanical devices is highly desirable.
Strong knowledge of real-time operating systems, microcontroller architectures, and interfacing with hardware peripherals (ADC, PWM, SPI, I2C, UART, etc.).
Experience in the life science instrumentation, medical devices, robotics, or laboratory automation sector (or similarly regulated/high-reliability environments) is a strong plus.

Nice-to-haves

Familiarity with Python or other scripting languages for test automation or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
Experience with modular platforms or distributed systems, where firmware in multiple devices must coordinate to achieve a larger function.
Exposure to AI or machine learning techniques as they apply to embedded systems or instrument control (for future intelligent features of the Daisy platform).
