The Role
Space Labs is a growing business in the development of advanced automated condition monitoring and defect detection equipment for the rail industry. We are seeking an experienced
ChiefMechanical Engineer
to head our growing engineering team.
In this role, you will be the local
technical and managerial anchor
for the mechanical product design, reporting directly to the CEO. You will support and assist with the mechanical design of complex electromechanical products from concept through to full deployment in a demanding, fast-paced environment. You will work closely and cross-functionally with other local teams (electrical, software, image processing, sourcing, etc.), and you will also be responsible for
tight collaboration with our sister company
(based in the USA) to ensure rapid development, rigorous testing, and seamless communication across both organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Product Development
Lead the entire
mechanical design lifecycle
of new products, ensuring designs meet functional specifications, manufacturability (DFM), and reliability targets.
Serve as the
primary technical interface
for all mechanical design issues with our
, facilitating effective joint development and clear project alignment.
Team Management & Collaboration
Lead, mentor, and manage
the mechanical team, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and timely execution.
Coordinate engineering tasks and projects using formal task management methodologies and software (e.g., Jira).
Ensure
effective and articulate communication
of technical details, project status, and risks to the CEO and cross-functional teams, particularly
with international stakeholders
.
Implement industry standard practices related to product design and development, including the utilization of proper
Product Lifecycle Management
(PLM) tools and documentation.
Required Qualifications
**Preferred Qualifications**
Environmental Design:
Direct experience designing mechanical systems intended for high shock and vibration environments (e.g., railway, defense, or heavy equipment), as well as extreme exposure to a variety of environmental factors that may be present near railroad sites (e.g. extreme cold and heat, snow and ice, local wildlife, dust/dirt/debris.)

U.S. counterparts
Oversee and perform the detailed design of components using various manufacturing methods, including machined parts, sheet metal parts and enclosures, castings, and 3D printed components.
Manage the assembly, integration, and testing of
complex electromechanical prototypes
and final products.
Review and ensure the mechanical compatibility of designs with electrical components, including the ability to read and interpret basic wiring harness schematics.
Drive continuous improvement in design processes, tool adoption, and documentation standards.
Education:
Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field supported by a strong portfolio of proven design experience.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of professional experience in product design and development, with a clear focus on electromechanical systems.
Industry Knowledge:
Proven experience in a relevant field such as: Heavy Industrial Equipment, Machine Vision Systems, Railway Signaling, and/or Industrial Automation
Full Lifecycle Experience:
Demonstrated success taking products from the initial concept/prototype phase through to full-scale deployment and field operation.
CAD Proficiency:
Expert level proficiency with SolidWorks and/or other equivalent professional CAD systems.
Team & Process Skills:
Proven capability to lead and manage an engineering team.
Experience utilizing task management platforms (e.g., Jira, Confluence) and adhering to agile or formal engineering best practices.
Simulation & Analysis:
Experience with advanced simulation and analysis tools:
FEA
(Finite Element Analysis) for structural integrity and mechanical stresses.
CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics) for thermal management and airflow analysis.
Motion Control:
Experience with the design and integration of actuators and other industrial motion control devices.
Machine Vision:
Familiarity with machine vision systems and processes; from hardware selection (cameras, lighting, and lenses) and testing, to image capture and processing.
