The Business Development Manager is responsible for executing commercial growth, owning marketing activities, and generating and closing revenue opportunities. This role combines business development, marketing execution, and sales ownership. The individual is accountable for identifying targets, creating market presence, generating leads, and converting opportunities into signed contracts.
Core Responsibilities
Business Development & Growth Execution
Execute company growth and go to market strategy with direct accountability for results
Identify and prioritize target markets, customer segments, and service offerings
Develop account targeting and outreach plans aligned with revenue goals
Maintain a rolling sales pipeline and revenue forecast
Marketing Ownership & Market Presence
Own and execute all marketing activities including messaging, positioning, and outreach
Develop and maintain sales and marketing materials such as pitch decks, capability overviews, and one pagers
Manage digital presence including website content, LinkedIn activity, and basic SEO
Represent the company at conferences, partnering meetings, and industry events
Gather competitive intelligence and customer feedback to refine positioning
Lead Generation & Prospecting
Proactively generate qualified leads through outbound email, LinkedIn, cold outreach, conferences, and referrals
Manage inbound inquiries and independently qualify opportunities
Schedule and lead initial customer discussions to assess technical fit, scope, timelines, and budget
Build and maintain a targeted prospect database
Opportunity & Deal Management
Own opportunities from first contact through proposal, negotiation, and contract execution
Coordinate internally to define scope, pricing, and delivery assumptions
Support development of proposals, statements of work, and commercial terms
Relationship & Account Management
Build long term relationships with customers and partners
Act as the primary commercial interface with customers
Identify expansion, repeat business, and upsell opportunities
Ensure smooth transition of closed deals to operations or delivery teams
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business, science, engineering, or related field
3 to 7 years experience in business development, sales, or combined BD and marketing roles
Proven ability to independently generate leads and close deals
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Comfortable owning ambiguous, early stage commercial responsibilities
Preferred Experience
Experience in early stage companies or small teams
Life sciences, biotech, CDMO, or technical services experience
Hands on experience managing websites, CRM systems, or LinkedIn outreach
