Bioinformatics Analyst – Neurodegenerative Disease Multi-Omics

About the Role
We're hiring a
Bioinformatics Analyst
to support the Computational and Evolutionary Neurogenomics (COEVOLVING) Unit within the Laboratory of Neurogenetics (LNG) at the National Institute on Aging. You'll be running and maintaining omics pipelines on NIH high-performance computing infrastructure (Biowulf), working across internal and publicly available datasets spanning snRNA-seq, bulk RNA-seq, metabolomics, and proteomics with a particular emphasis on sex differences in the aging brain and multi-species comparative analyses including an emerging "macaque GTEx" resource.
This isn't a siloed pipeline role. You'll be embedded in the NIA research community collaborating with trainees, presenting at lab meetings, and contributing as an author on team publications to support open science efforts.
What You'll Do
Pipeline Development & Maintenance
- Download and process large-scale omics datasets from public repositories (SRA, Synapse, BLSA) and internal sources
- Run QC and analysis workflows on NIH Biowulf HPC and in the cloud
- Maintain, version-control, and refine existing pipelines on GitHub
Data Management
- Organize and curate project data on shared compute resources
- Deposit data to external repositories for sharing and reporting
Scientific Engagement
- Collaborate with trainees and LNG/CARD members on new and ongoing projects
- Participate in weekly lab meetings, journal clubs, seminars, and talks
Growth Trajectory
First 6 months
: Get up to speed on group projects and research priorities; streamline and update existing codebases; initiate new projects alongside incoming trainees
By 1 year
: Begin leading workshops on bioinformatics approaches, coding practices, and data maintenance
Beyond 1 year
: Contribute to long-term collaborative projects across multiple data types (snRNA-seq, bulk RNA-seq, metabolomics, proteomics) and species (humans, nonhuman primates, mice); assist in assembling the macaque GTEx resource; review manuscripts and serve as co-author on team publications
What We're Looking For
Required
- PhD in biological science, data science, or a related discipline
- Proficiency in R and/or Python for bioinformatics analysis
- Experience with HPC environments (Biowulf, various clouds, Slurm, or similar)
- Solid grasp of version control (Git/GitHub) and reproducible workflows
- Familiarity with standard tools for RNA-seq and/or single-cell analysis (DESeq2, Scanpy, Seurat, etc.)
- Ability to periodically come to NIH Campus in Bethesda MD, USA
- US citizen or similar work permit holder able to pass basic background check
Preferred
- Experience processing and QC'ing public omics datasets (SRA, GEO, Synapse)
- Exposure to multi-species comparative genomics or transcriptomics
- Understanding of neurodegenerative disease biology
- Experience with workflow managers (Snakemake, Nextflow, WDL)
- Track record of contributing to peer-reviewed publications
- Candidates local to Washington DC metropolitan area or able to relocate
