Academic Hematopathologist

Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program and McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario

Applications are invited for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Academic Hematopathologist position within the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP). The successful candidate will hold a full-time academic appointment in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University.

Located at the Juravinski Hopsital and Cancer Centre, the successful candidate will join a team of four full-time Hematopathologists providing a comprehensive diagnostic hematopathology service within one of Canada’s largest bone marrow transplantation and lymphoma centres. Participation in shared on-call responsibilities is required.

Applicants must hold certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in Hematological Pathology; or certification in Anatomical (Diagnostic and Molecular) Pathology or General (Diagnostic and Clinical) Pathology with additional RCPSC-accredited fellowship training in hematopathology; or equivalent fellowship training in hematopathology recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The successful candidate must be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of Ontario.

Compensation will be aligned with the Province of Ontario’s Laboratory Medicine Funding Framework Agreement (LMFFA). The current (2024/25) LMFFA provides approximately $404,400 per annum in total compensation (salary and benefits) for a 1.0 FTE pathologist.

The successful candidate will be appointed at a rank commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. A demonstrated commitment to academic scholarship including education, quality improvement, knowledge translation, innovation, and/or clinical or translational research is essential.

The ideal candidate will:

• Be a collegial and motivated physician with a strong sense of professionalism and excellent communication skills.
• Have training and/or experience in lymphoma and bone marrow diagnostics, peripheral blood and body fluid morphology, flow cytometry, and molecular hematopathology.
• Have experience or training in pediatric bone marrow interpretation.
• Demonstrate prior research experience relevant to hematopathology.
• Experience or training in laboratory hemostasis, transfusion medicine, or hemoglobinopathy diagnostics is not required but will be considered an asset.

About the Division of Hematopathology, HRLMP

The HRLMP Division of Hematopathology serves a diverse patient population and supports a high-volume clinical service with a broad range of complex and challenging cases. The practice includes adult hematology and pediatric hematology-oncology (in collaboration with McMaster Children’s Hospital), as well as a substantial external and consultative referral service. The Division is committed to developing an innovative, efficient, and forward-looking service, with particular emphasis on digital hematopathology and data-driven laboratory stewardship.
