The Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) is an online data visualization and distribution platform focused on the geography and dynamics of economic activities. It integrates and distributes data from various sources, empowering analysts in the private sector, public sector, and academia. The OEC offers a range of tools, including LLMs for chat, forecasting tools like the Tariff Simulator Report and Trend Explorer, and various visualizations such as treemaps, stacked charts, scatter plots, network graphs, and maps. It also provides bulk data downloads, custom tables via the Company Explorer and Data Explorer, and API access. The platform allows users to explore economic complexity rankings, growth forecasts, and access publications and educational resources. The OEC was initially a research project at MIT and was spun out as an open-source project in 2012, with subsequent versions refining its capabilities and data scope, including subnational data and advanced features like AI-driven insights.
