Masakhane Research Foundation
Masakhane is a grassroots organization dedicated to strengthening and promoting Natural Language Processing (NLP) research in African languages, by Africans, for Africans. Recognizing the vast linguistic diversity of Africa (over 2000 languages) and its underrepresentation in technology, Masakhane aims to rectify this imbalance. Their mission is to empower Africans to shape and own technological advancements, fostering human dignity, well-being, and equity through inclusive community building, open participatory research, and multidisciplinarity. Key values include African-centricity, ownership, openness, kindness, responsibility, data sovereignty, and reproducibility. Masakhane's work involves creating resources, facilitating collaboration, and lowering participation barriers in NLP, with a focus on machine translation, Named Entity Recognition (NER), and speech technologies. The organization has a community of over 1000 participants from numerous African countries and has published research in various conferences.
