Duke Institute for Health Innovation
The Duke Institute for Health Innovation (DIHI) catalyzes transformative innovations in health and healthcare by implementing high-impact innovations, developing leadership, and fostering entrepreneurship across Duke University and Duke Health. DIHI operates as a platform to advance innovations across the health enterprise, working closely with clinical settings including hospitals, home care, hospice, and clinics to implement real-world solutions addressing pressing healthcare challenges. It invests in innovations to reinvent healthcare, creating sustainable value for patients and communities. DIHI functions as a "Living Lab" to develop, evaluate, and integrate new care models and facilitates their dissemination and scaling within Duke Health. It sources and executes innovation projects primarily through an annual Request for Applications (RFA) and an Innovation Jam, collaborating with faculty and clinical teams to refine and integrate innovations such as new care models, digital health, AI and machine learning algorithms, software development, and clinical decision support. DIHI also supports transformative educational experiences for students and trainees, engaging a broad pool of scholars. Since 2013, DIHI has developed and implemented over 65 innovative solutions, launched over 10 companies, and created foundational platforms for integrating AI, machine learning, data sciences, and digital health into routine clinical care. It licenses technologies to extend impact beyond Duke and connects expertise from academia, medicine, government, and industry to promote novel healthcare solutions and strategic partnerships for technology development and scaling.
