The Center for Bioethics and Research (CBR), also known as the West African Bioethics Training Program (WAB), was established in 2004 with a grant from the Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Its primary goal is to build bioethics capacity in West Africa by integrating modern bioethics with the region's cultural heritage. CBR achieves this through promoting awareness in bioethics within the health research community, offering postgraduate training, and providing support to research ethics committees. Key activities include establishing bioethics training programs, conducting seminars and workshops, partnering with governments on research ethics guidelines, and training institutional Research Ethics Committees. They are also involved in several research projects, including those focused on breast cancer epidemiology, diabetes, and genomics research ethics. CBR's work is supported by various US government grants and collaborations with international institutions.
